Homemade applesauce is easy to make; the hardest part is peeling the apples. Traditionally, it’s made on the stovetop but its better to bake it. With the stovetop method, you have to add water or juice to prevent sticking; no water is necessary with the baking method, which translates to a more intense apple flavor.

Ingredients

  • apple: 4 pound (about 10, peeled, cored and cut into 1-inch chunks (I like a combination of McIntosh and Golden Delicious)
  • unsalted butter: 3 Tbsp (cut into 1/4-inch chunks)
  • light or dark brown sugar: 0.25 cup (plus 2 tablespoons)
  • ground cinnamon: 0 Tbsp (for serving (optional))

  4. Using a potato masher or fork, mash the apples to a chunky consistency. Taste and add more brown sugar if necessary. Note that no two batches will taste the same — it all depends on the apples you use. Transfer to a serving dish and add a dash of cinnamon, if desired.

History of the Chunky Homemade Applesauce

Applesauce has been a popular snack since ancient times. Apples are one of the longest cultivated fruit trees, dating back to 3000 BC in the Middle East. The Greeks and Romans also enjoyed apples and served them with honey as a dessert.

In the 18th century, applesauce became a popular dish in America. It was a staple food for early settlers because apples were inexpensive and easy to grow.

Today, applesauce is enjoyed all around the world as a sweet and healthy snack, and this chunky homemade applesauce recipe offers a delightful twist on the classic dish.

Tips and Tricks for Chunky Homemade Applesauce Recipe

When making chunky homemade applesauce, use a mixture of apples to achieve a balance of sweet and tart flavors. McIntosh and Golden Delicious apples are a great combination, but feel free to use any type of apple you prefer.

To save time, consider using an electric apple peeler and corer to prepare the apples. These devices can make the process much faster and easier.

When baking the apples, be sure to cover them with aluminum foil to prevent them from drying out. This will help ensure that your applesauce ends up moist and flavorful.

For a smoother texture, use a blender instead of a potato masher or fork to mash the apples.

Tips for presenting the dish

Chunky homemade applesauce can be served warm or cold. If serving warm, top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious dessert. If serving cold, consider pairing it with yogurt or granola for a healthy breakfast or snack.

For an elegant presentation, serve the applesauce in small glass jars or ramekins. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a slice of fresh apple for a beautiful and tasty garnish.
