Tamarind rice is a dish popular in South India. Its rich taste that comes with aromatic spices will not leave anyone indifferent. The cooking process involves several steps, but they are quite easy. The ground powder only adds taste to the dish. So don’t forget to add it. Your loved ones will certainly like this Indian dish. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • rice: 1 cup
  • oil: 4 Tbsp
  • ground nut: 0.25 cup (roasted)
  • sesame seeds: 1 Tbsp
  • tamarind: 100 g
  • mustard seeds: 1 tsp
  • Bengal gram: 2 Tbsp
  • Jaggery: 1 Tbsp
  • turmeric: 1 Tbsp
  • black pepper: 1 Tbsp
  • fenugreek: 10 g
  • asafoetida: 1 Tbsp
  • dry red chili: 2 pinch
  • salt: 1 tsp
  • curry leaves: 1 bunch

  1. Take a pot and soak tamarind in the water for 15 minutes. Then take a frying pan, pour oil inside, add mustard seeds and allow it for spluttering then add Bengal gram, Red chillis, Curry leaves one by one.

  2. Sprinkle Asafoetida and turmeric.

  3. Add tamarind extract, roasted ground nut and salt and mix well. Then add Jaggery and cook for 15 minutes. This is how you will get tamarind paste for the rice.

  4. Dry and roast the following ingredients: Sesame seed, Pepper, Fenugreek, Red chillies and grind keep it aside.

  5. The next step is to cook the rice.  Boil it and spread it in a large plate.

  6. Then mix the boiled rice with tamarind paste you have cooked in the previous step. Mix the ingredients of the dish.

  7. If you like spices, you can additionally add coriander powder, fenugreek powder, sesame powder, oil and mix the ingredients once again. Let the dish stay for about 6 hours so that rice will absorb powder mixes and tamarind paste to have better taste and aroma. Serve warm. Bon appétit!
