girasol the product for healthy dishes
by natalia

What is girasol? Is it a fruit or a vegetable? Or, maybe, it belongs to another group of products? Actually, girasol is a special kind of a vegetable, which belongs to the sunflower family. The major characteristics of plants belonging to this family are their long life span and general sunflower-like look. Girasol is not an exception. The flowers of this plant resemble a sunflower, but people usually do not consume them. Instead, they eat and cook the part of the plant, which grows under the ground.

Girasol was first cultivated in South Africa several centuries ago. In the 17th century, it was brought to Europe, where it quickly became popular because of its unusual taste and high crop yield. It should be mentioned, though, that not all housewives knew how to cook the vegetable properly and tried avoiding it. Only when girasol became popular in Belgium, Netherlands and other European countries and lots of recipes containing this ingredient started appearing, the vegetable became widely used in many dishes. People even learnt to cook luxurious and unique dishes out of it, including wine. Girasol was also used as one of the major components in different natural recipes.

Nutritional Value of Girasol

Girasol has lots of benefits and high nutritional value. It is not only tasty and sweet, but it also contains a long list of vitamins and microelements. General look of the product differs in size, color and shape. It can be violet, yellow and even red. Fresh girasol tastes like cabbage, while its fried variant resembles potatoes.

When stored correctly, girasol has long shelf life. To prolong its life span, it is recommended to keep the product in a cool dark place, preferably, a basement or a fridge. If there is no much space in your home and girasol grows in your orchard, then it is better to dig that amount of the product you are going to eat. This is the best way to make sure the vegetable is fresh.

What dishes is it possible to cook using girasol?  As mentioned above, people have learnt to cook various kinds of dishes using this unusual, but so tasty vegetable. There are lots of salads, soups and second dishes cooked with the product these days. This vegetable is universal. It always tastes great and you can boil, fry, marinate, and even pickle it. Variants are almost unlimited here, while the result is always pleasant and surprising!
