Stages of cooking
-
Peel, core, and roughly chop the apples. Discard the seeds and stems.
-
In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the chopped apples, water, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves (if using). Stir well to evenly distribute the spices.
-
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir occasionally to prevent the apples from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
-
Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking for about 20 minutes or until the apples are soft and tender, stirring occasionally.
-
Once the apples have cooked, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
-
Using an immersion blender or a regular blender, puree the cooked applesauce until smooth and silky. If using a regular blender, blend in batches and be cautious not to overfill to avoid any accidents.
-
Optional: If you prefer a tangier flavor, add the lemon juice and blend once more to incorporate it into the applesauce.
-
Taste the applesauce and adjust the sweetness or spice level according to your preference by adding more sugar or spices if desired.
-
Transfer the applesauce to a container or jar and let it cool completely. Once cooled, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
-
Enjoy your homemade applesauce as a delightful dessert, or use it as a flavorful topping for pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or as an ingredient in various baked goods.
-
Note: This applesauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.
