Stages of cooking
-
Rinse the rice: Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse it under cold water until the water runs clear. This will remove excess starch and prevent the rice from clumping.
-
Add the water and salt: In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil over high heat. Add a pinch of salt if desired.
-
Add the rice: Once the water is boiling, add the rice and stir gently with a fork to prevent the grains from sticking together.
-
Cover and simmer: Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and reduce the heat to low. Let the rice simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
-
Fluff the rice: Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5-10 minutes. This will allow the rice to absorb any remaining moisture. Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork.
-
Add butter (optional): If you wish, add a tablespoon of butter. This will make the rice even fluffier, and add a nice rich flavor.
