This pasta sauce is excellent in lasagna or as a meat sauce. I use it in my popular lasagna recipe, so I thought I'd share it on its own.
Ingredients
- sweet Italian sausage: 1 pound (sliced)
- lean ground beef: 0.75 pound
- onion: 0.5 cup (minced)
- garlic: 2 clove (crushed)
- tomatoes: 1 can (28 ounce can, crushed)
- tomato sauce: 2 cans (6.5 ounce cans)
- tomato paste: 2 cans (6 ounce cans)
- water: 0.5 cup
- white sugar: 2 Tbsp
- basil: 1.5 tsp (dried)
- italian seasoning: 1 tsp
- fennel seed: 0.5 tsp
- salt: 0.5 tsp
- ground black pepper: 0.25 tsp

Cook sausage, beef, onion, and garlic in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat until browned; drain fat.

Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water. Mix in sugar, basil, Italian seasoning, fennel seed, salt, and pepper.

Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until cooked through, about 1 1/2 hours.
